APH - The Grand Union Flag

Yes! It's true! I loved history before I started watching/reading Hetalia :ohnoes:

I drew this about a month ago while I was thinking about a little story I'd heard from comic-chic I think somewhere in her webcomic The Dreamer.
I don't remember it exactly, but I think it was that during the Revolution, the Americans rose their Grand Union Flag (is that where Alfred's name comes from?) and the British started cheering because they thought they were surrendering.

Or something like that XD

If I remember right, it wasn't until 1777 that Betsy Ross sewed the thirteen-starred flag.

I actually haven't studied the American Revolution in school since....middle or maybe even elementary school... (I'm a high school senior now) But I've been reading some history books for fun, mostly biographies, for about a year now.

In case you can't read the writing:
England: Where'd that idiot America go now? I should've known he'd become so rebellious. Especially after he threw all that tea I gave him into the Atlantic. [/walloftext]
England: ...
America: W-What?
England: Your flag.
America: What about it?
England: Oh, nothing--
England: Just that you could've told me you were just going to surrender! (Now I have to carry this musket back home again!!)
America: This is my flag! I'm not surrendering!! ENGLAND!!!

I believe Alfred's name came from a ship that flew the Grand Union Flag. That or the Anglo-Saxon king that fought Vikings.

This comic made me laugh. The idea that it looked like Alfred was showing loyalty and surrendering to Britain. My students mad the same mistakes this past year thinking it was a Loyalist flag...
